Understanding the Levels of Care, and Where Luma Fits In
SAMHSA categorizes substance use treatment into five levels of care, ranging from early intervention to medically managed intensive inpatient care. Luma Recovery Center specializes in outpatient services, covering Levels 1 through 2.5, which provide structured support without requiring residential treatment.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Level 2.5: High-Intensity Outpatient Care
Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is the most intensive outpatient level, offering structured, comprehensive treatment similar to residential care but allowing clients to return home each evening.
What PHP Involves:
● Treatment five to six days per week, typically five to six hours per day
● Daily group therapy focusing on cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), trauma-informed care, and relapse prevention
● Individual therapy, psychiatric support, and medication management (as needed)
● Family therapy and education to rebuild relationships and strengthen support systems
● Life skills training and holistic wellness activities, such as mindfulness and stress management
Who PHP Is For:
● Individuals transitioning from detox or inpatient treatment who need structured support
● Those struggling with substance use or mental health challenges that require daily intervention
● Clients seeking an alternative to residential treatment but who need high-intensity care
PHP provides a structured, supportive environment that helps clients stabilize, build coping strategies, and prepare for the next phase of recovery.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Level 2.1: Structured, Flexible Treatment
Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offers a balance of structured therapy and real-world application. Clients attend treatment several days per week while managing work, school, or family responsibilities.
What IOP Involves:
● Therapy three to five days per week, typically nine to fifteen hours per week
● Group therapy focused on relapse prevention, skill-building, and emotional regulation
● Weekly individual therapy and case management to address personal goals and challenges
● Trauma-informed care and evidence-based modalities, including CBT and DBT
● Peer support, family involvement, and holistic wellness approaches
Who IOP Is For:
● Individuals stepping down from PHP or residential treatment who still need structured care
● Those needing more than weekly therapy but who are stable enough to live independently
● People managing moderate substance use or mental health concerns with ongoing support
IOP serves as a bridge between intensive treatment and independent living, ensuring continued accountability and therapeutic progress.
Outpatient Program (OP)
Level 1: Ongoing Support for Long-Term Recovery
Our Outpatient Program (OP) is the least intensive level of care, providing continued therapy and support for individuals who have made significant progress in recovery but still benefit from structured care.
What OP Involves:
● One to three therapy sessions per week, based on individual needs
● Individual therapy with licensed clinicians to address ongoing challenges
● Optional group therapy for continued peer connection and relapse prevention
● Medication management and psychiatric support (if needed)
● Long-term recovery planning and access to community resources
Who OP Is For:
● Individuals stepping down from IOP who still need structured therapy
● Those who have established stability but benefit from continued professional support
● People seeking long-term relapse prevention and mental health maintenance
Outpatient treatment at this level is focused on empowerment, self-sufficiency, and relapse prevention, ensuring long-term success beyond formal treatment.
Choosing the Right Level of Care
Selecting the appropriate level of care is a crucial step in recovery.
Our team conducts comprehensive assessments to determine the best fit based on:
● Severity of substance use or mental health symptoms
● Current level of functioning in daily life
● History of previous treatment and relapse risk
● Individual goals and recovery needs
By aligning our programs with SAMHSA’s established levels of care, we ensure that each client receives the right amount of structure and support at every stage of their journey.
